After the war, a group of libertarian conservatives had collaborated to found a fortnightly, which they called The Freeman. This was done in reverent memory of the legendary Freeman that, in the 1920s, had been edited by Albert Jay Nock. The reborn Freeman’s founding editors were successful men of journalistic affairs. Henry Hazlitt was a prominent author (his Economics in One Lesson was a perennial best-seller), had a regular column in Newsweek, and lectured widely. A story went the rounds some years after the new Freeman’s founding, placing him at dinner with the eminent economist Ludwig von Mises, and the novelist Ayn Rand.
Mises was the dean of the Austrian school of economics. Hitler, whom he fled in 1934, must have been the only human being who ever intimidated Ludwig von Mises. He was a mountain of certitudes having to do with the proper organization of economic life. Ayn Rand, born in St. Petersburg on the eve of the Soviet Revolution, was herself a center of social discipline, with whom one differed only at the risk of lifelong excommunication from her kingdom of free creatures who lived by her (their) word, in the creation and re-creation of life, as it emerged in Atlas Shrugged.
The story went that at this little dinner, Rand contradicted Mises on some doctrinal point, causing the eminent professor to stop eating and mobilize his scorn and fury on her. Ayn Rand thereupon burst into tears and exclaimed, “You are treating me like an ignorant little Jewish girl!”
Mises jumped up from his chair with joy. “That is exactly what you are! An ignorant little Jewish girl!”
Hazlitt attempted pacification but finally gave up, accepting, as editor of The Freeman, occasional essays from the Mises school, as also from representatives of the Rand school of “Objectivism.” [s. 19-20]
Aynı olaya Avusturya iktisatçısı Guido Hülsmann da yazdığı Mises: The Last Knight of Liberalism adlı biyografisinde (kısaca) değiniyor.
In the fall of 1961, Mises and Rand met at a party in Henry Hazlitt’s house. After dinner, a discussion between them turned into an argument on philosophical principle and drew the attention of the bystanders. It is not clear what was said, even though there were a number of topics on which they heartily disagreed. In any case, Russell Kirk, a notorious critic of Randianism who had witnessed the discussion, was later reported to have said in his lectures before student audiences that Mises had called Ayn Rand “a silly little Jew girl.” When the report was brought to Mises’s attention, he immediately wrote to Kirk: “I never called Mrs. Ayn Rand—or for that matter, anyone else—‘a silly little Jew girl.’ I should be obliged if you would not repeat this false story in the future.”
Kirk denied it all:
Your informant, with the eccentricity and fanaticism characteristic of the Randian cult, seems to have combined details from several accounts of the meeting between yourself and Miss Rand which she had heard, and to have attributed the composite story to me. Any anti-Jewish prejudice, or suggestion thereof, was not contained in my second-hand account, nor in the account which I heard. But I am glad to have from Mr. Hazlitt a more accurate report of the encounter, before receiving your letter. [s. 1001-2]
The incident did not occur at the dinner table, but later. As host, I had taken orders for drinks and was bringing them to the living room. As I entered, Ayn was saying to Lu: “You treat me like an ignorant little Jewish girl.” I had not hear what Lu had said, but I bravely started to patch things up: “Oh, I’m sure, Ayn, that Lu didn’t mean it that way.” Lu promptly jumped up and said: “I did mean it that way.”
Yoksa birileri yıllardır Demirel’i liberallere büyük yazar Ayn Rand diye yutturuyor mu? Üstelik Türkiye’de Rand’in kitaplarını Sinan Çetin’in basması durumu daha da şüpheli hâle getiriyor. Objektivizmin aslı Demirelcilik olmasın sakın?
Ek: Amerikalı şovmen Steven Colbert The Colbert Report adlı programında Rand’in Atlas Shrugged – Atlas Silkindi kitabıyla bayağı bir dalga geçiyor. Colbert’in dediğine göre, Rand’in hayranları arasında eski Amerikan başkanı Ronald Reagan, Amerikan merkez bankası FED’in eski başkanı Alan Greenspan ve Şeytan Kilisesi’nin (Church of Satan) kurucusu ve Şeytan İncili‘nin (The Satanic Bible) yazarı Anton LaVey de varmış.
